Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1971)

A misstep for Argento prior to his horror opus Deep Red that offers some of his suspenseful creativity through music, camera placements, and signature plot reveals, but fails to live up to his gialli made both before and after. A drummer is caught up in a series of murders after being framed by a masked assailant with a grudge. On top of the awkward humor and characters, the film just isnt overly interesting and doesnt introduce anything unique enough to set it apart in the peak gialli era. It is worth checking out for Argento and gialli completists, but it is not an exemplar of his work.

Rating: 7/10.

  1. i liked this movie, but i would have to agree that it isn't his best work. i love argento's movies and i would never say that any of them are bad, but this one hasn't as much substance as the others. it was interesting to see it, though.

  2. Thats the thing, comparing it to typical genre films, it is still above average, but when you are comparing to Argento's masterworks, it just isnt close to his finest. FOr some reason, I have a strange affinity towards Cat O' Nine Tails, and though I rate it below Tenebrae, Deep Red, Opera, and Bird in respect to his giallo entries, I still enjoy it very much and rank it higher than Flies. People often ask me why I say Phenomena is just an average Argento entry as well, but when you have to compare to Suspiria and others, there has to be a scale there somewhere lol.. So many awesome films from just one man!! Its his own fault for making it so hard to pick a favorite!
