Tomie (1999)

In a strange twist of fate for Japanese horror, a vengeful female spirit kills her trespassers after being brutally murdered. At the same time, another girl with some strange tie to the ghost must unravel her forgotten past in a series of Argento-esque reveals in order to put the spirit to rest. One cant help but feel like they are missing something when watching this film, as many of the scenes are non-sequitor or unexplained, but it adds to the mystery and suspense. Unlike Ju-On or Ringu, Tomie is a reserved ghost that exacts methodical revenge rather than just scaring the piss out of people. The victims are all closely correlated to the crime as well, rather than selected arbitrarily via video-cassette or renting the wrong, wrong house. For a slow build and solid revenge flick, it will carry an hour and a half.

Rating: 7/10.

  1. I'm really surprised that you gave it such a high rating. I consider Tomie to be my favorite terrible movie. I always thought that if you found a truly horrible movie, one that might be the worst, you had to own it and this is one of mine.

Maybe I'm just not into how bad they butchered the comic, which is an incredible and mind blowing read, just like anything Junji Ito makes.

  2. I didnt go into it having read the manga which may be why I wasnt as disappointed with it. I liked that it does differentiate itself from the other J-ghost horror by giving Tomie more personality. It wasnt great, but a 7 translates to an average C in my ratings scale so I felt it was an ok effort.
