Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the garden.. The killer tomatoes are back, and this time they have been transformed into human killing machines in another kooky plot to take over the world! It is up to a new group of heroes to stop Professor Gangreen before its too late. With the original writing and directing team returning as well, the film manages to recapture much of the same familiar humor and tone to the original, while benefiting from the vastly increased budget and a cast including genre favorite John Astin and George Clooney in his first film role. The gags are hit and miss, with most of the funnier material involving the shots that break the fourth wall and take stabs at the cheapness of the film itself. Unfortunately, the film takes a huge turn for the worst shortly after the half-way point after a steady build, killing the pace and losing the audience to boredom. Any fan of the original will find plenty to like in this one; expect bad jokes, intentional cheese of the cheesiest variety, and even some fun. I always want to like this one more than I do, it just fails to live up to its awesome potential.
Rating: 6/10.
Cheese: Gorgonzola.
