Wrong Turn (2003)

I have never been a fan of this film. I find it to be extremely derivative and boring, which confuses even me considering every other Slasher and Survival flick recycles elements of each of the films preceding them. The film is technically proficient, with beautiful cinematography, an excellent sense of timing for the scares, and thoughtful make-up designs. What turns me off immediately is when the characters and scenarios are completely unbelievable in a film that otherwise takes itself very seriously. This is most apparent when the protagonists leap from a towering forest ranger station into the trees, miraculously catching the branches and swinging to safety, only to battle the mutants in the trees. There are plenty of obvious nods to classics like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and several good gore sequences, but the film never contributes anything new or different to the genre. I cant tell you exactly why I dont like it, since the acting, filming, and FX are all above average, I just dont. A group of friends must battle to survive off a backwoods road after being stranded and stalked by an deformed group of inbreds.

Rating: 8/10.
Gore: 7/10.
Entertainment: 7/10.

  1. Yeah, I appreciate the technical prowess of "Wrong Turn" but the story itself is actually pretty bland. The first death was kind of cool though.

  2. I LOVE THIS MOVIE FOR THE SIMPLE FACT IT TOOK YOU BACK TO THE DAYS OF TURE CLASSIC SLASHER OR THE TRUE BOOGIE MAN IN THE WOODS OF THE DARK. IT TOOK ME BACK TO THE 1981 OVERLOOKED CLASSIC JUST BEFORE DAWN AND ALL THE OTHER LOST IN THE WOOD MOVIES.

  3. Yeah it's a pretty mediocre flick. But at least it's better than most modern horror these days. Hell, I'll watch Eliza Dushku is anything. Girl is hot! I personally found the sequel, WRONG TURN 2, to be a lot more fun than this one.

  4. Thats why I cant rate it any lower despite my ditaste for it, its a good flick, but man it pisses me off. There are too many campy elements that are played straight in the first, which is why I 100% agree that the sequel is much much more fun since it does away with the ridiculous seriousness and goes for unabashed gore, review to come tonight!

  5. I really enjoyed this movie. I even went to see it twice in the theater since I missed all those great similar movies from the late 70's and 80's in the theaters (Mom wouldn't allow it!), but I did catch them on cable, though. I remember people getting up as the credits were rolling then that last scene begins and everyone just froze where they were. Love that last shot. The first sequel was fine, but IMO, it doesn't compare to this one.
