Blood Moon (2001)
Im going to make a bold statement and say that this is one of the best films to come out in the last decade. Not only is it technically proficient, but it is timeless, captivating, and offers a unique reversal of the werewolf mythos. Tara plays The Wolf Girl in a traveling carnival, but when given the chance to take an untested formula to reverse her hypertricosis, her actions become more feral as her looks become more human. The cast includes top-liners Tim Curry, Grace Jones, and Shawn Ashmore playing beside an authentic group of freaks with unbelievable abnormalities, but the true strength of the film lies in Victoria Sanchez' portrayal of the tragic and empathetic Tara. While I rarely comment on soundtracks or scores, the selections and musical notes truly enhance the viewing experience, expanding the roles of the freaks and lending an increased sense of class and quality. The cinematography and earth-toned color palette paired with the classic carnival backdrop makes for a beautiful Gothic setting. Blood Moon isnt overly gory, and often even borders on a moralistic teen drama, but I feel that every element from the writing to the acting blends perfectly for the final product, making this a must-see for every horror fan!
