Child's Play 2 (1990)

What can I really say about CHILD'S PLAY 2? The larger budget is clearly evidenced in the improved maneuverability of the various puppets, and especially in the huge manufacturing set at the climax of the film. The dark satire of the original is almost completely removed, and Chucky's sinister humor is beginning to slip into Freddy's cheap one-liners. As as early 90s Slasher? Its an OK film. There are enough wide and low angled shots combined with moody lighting and atmosphere to set up for a few creepy moments with everyone's favorite killer doll, and we do get a handful of dead bodies. The cover, on the other hand.. I have been terrified of the CHILD'S PLAY 2 poster since it debuted on VHS. Take it for what it's worth, it is the best of the 'straight' sequels, but I prefer the tongue-in-cheek BRIDE and SEED (blasphemy!).

  1. Yeah, 'okay' is how I would classify it, too. Nothing special.

  2. This film has a lot of gaps in logic, like for example, why was that Good Guy Doll production line, working all by itself, without a single human around? No security cameras to see these kids destroying this factory? I mean, surely a factory like that one has cameras recording....theres the evidence that the world needs! Chucky is real! He is on the security tapes of this giant lonely doll factory!

I do like the make up effects with Chucky melting and all that.

  3. Thats EXACTLY what I said to my wife again this time. She hates it when I talk down on the series, since it is her absolute favorite, but c'mon, the one dude comes out when the machine jams but other than that no one is behind the wheels lol..

I also like how the teacher has air jammed into her heart, but is blown back by the air pump and still lives long enough for Chucky to beat her to death with the ruler rather than having a heart attack from the rush of air to her heart.

  4. I think Seed and Bride are great movies that have a perfect balance of humor and horror. I am a fan of the more serious trilogy, but haven't seen the second one in many years. I do remember that the slutty Billy Idol lookalike is in it, though.

  5. Haha, I actually like Bride and Seed too because they're so blatantly sleazy. Let's face it, if any of the horror icons didn't need legit sequels...it's Child's Play.

  6. Becky, you couldnt be more right. And Matt, she totally looks like Billy Idol. She could be his brother lol..

  7. I'm a freak for the Child's Play series and I agree, this is the best of the 'straight' sequels (I love Chucky's exclamation of "What the hell?!" when a tower of boxes collapses on him). But I have a soft spot for all the movies - hopefully the series will start up again before too long.

  8. My favorite scene will always be when Andy first talks to Chucky, who then impersonates the Tommy doll he 'killed' a few scenes earlier. The shifting eyes are classic!

  9. I thought it was a decent sequel. I do think that Bride of Chucky (which I was lucky enough to catch in the theater) was the best sequel by far. Seed of Chucky was bad but had some good moments (his son).
