Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night 2 (1987)

A jealous lover accidentally sets his high school sweetie and newly crowned prom queen Mary Lou ablaze at their Senior Prom, killing her and trapping her soul in her tiara. Decades later, her vengeful spirit is unleashed upon a new set of teens when she possesses a young prom queen hopeful, Vicki. HELLO MARY LOU is a complete deviation from the classic Slasher formula exhibited in the first film, sharing much more in common with the Supernatural elements in CARRIE or A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. Its mediocre effects sequences are blatantly lifted from these superior films, with the only interesting death being that of a half-naked teen that is crushed in her locker. Michael Ironside is wasted alongside the rest of the unconvincing "teen" cast, but Wendy Lyon stands out as the horrendous lead Vicki. Her overly sexualized scenes that follow her possession are awkward and uncomfortable, and not the least bit enticing. PROM NIGHT 2 suffers from a complete lack of identity and many of the other problems that signaled the end of an era in the late 80s.

  1. I loved this sequel when I was a kid and bought that special edition recently. I haven't watched it again, but I'm sure it will be terrible. I'm also sure I'll love it! I remember that creepy fucking horse...I can only imagine how poor it looks now!

  2. That horse is the only creepy thing about the entire film, its actually the only moment I didnt cringe lol..

  3. Okay, I have to object. I think 'Prom Night 2' is great!

    * You can't say that it's lacking in humor when Mary-Lou's possession of the girl causes her theme song to play.
    * How is it not funny when she gets her "'50s make-over' by Mary-Lou?
    * How about that scene where the blackboard turns into water? That's good stuff.
    * Honestly, the only shoddy effect comes when revived Mary-Lou's mask-line is visible in one shot.
    * You have to be a bit jaded to think that a scene where an art supply closet gets possessed and kills someone is not 'interesting.'
    * The horse is by far the star of the show. Whoever made that thing needs an award or something.

As far as comparing this one to 'Prom Night 3,' I'll get to that somewhere else...

  4. I gave it n honest second shot after hating it the first time, just cant get in to this one no matter how hard I try. Its not so much that th FX are terrible, its just that they are unoriginal and uninspired, maybe with the exception of the chalk board. The horse really is the coolest thing ever though. The horse should have made out with her dad like she did.

  5. Whenever I get around to making my video review of 'Prom Night 2' in the future, I'll turn you to my side. :-)
