The Beast (1975)

Young Lucy is scheduled to marry to the boorish Mathurin at his family's home deep within the French countryside, but a nightmarish beast beckons her to join him from the woods surrounding the estate. A more fitting title for Polish director Walerian Borowczyk's kinky exploitation film might have been 'BEAUTY BONED THE BEAST,' since that is the only thing that anyone is likely to remember from this otherwise boring Eurotrash entry. Borowczyk's sharp eye for the camera and costuming do lend an unusual amount of credibility despite the subject matter, though no amount of softcore sex or nudity can take away from the silly attempts at eroticism. Fans of Jean Rollin, Jesus Franco, horse copulation, and werewolf doggie style will be right at home here, but anyone expecting to see a traditional Gothic horror film with a sexy twist like in DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS or THE COMPANY OF WOLVES will be gravely disappointed.

Rating: 6/10.

  4. I nabbed it for $10, it is almost worth it for the absurdity, but I'd be amazed if it hits the DVD player again in less than a decade
