Donkey Punch (2008)

Yes, a legitimate thriller exists that is called DONKEY PUNCH, and no, it is not just some cryptic name that has no bearing on the events in the film. "What is a donkey punch," you ask? Well, you will just have to wait and see... The film follows a group of seven throbbing young vacationers as they head out on a beautiful yacht off of the coast of Spain to indulge themselves in sex and drugs, but when things are taken too far and one of them is killed in a freak accident, the others are left to quarrel over what to do with the body. Outside of its outlandish premise and graphic content, DONKEY PUNCH offers little in terms of fun or originality. Oliver Blackburn handles the set-up with style and efficiency, building an increasingly darker mood and growing suspense as the ship sails forward, but after the titular event throws the characters into an emotional maelstrom, the final act falls into an endless circle of finger pointing and fighting. The decent acting and cramped quarters at least make this a passable high-seas thriller for fans of films like DEAD CALM or THE DEEP.

Rating: 7/10.
