After slaying 14 young girls, the sadistic child killer 'The Wolf' is finally captured and thrown into a maximum security asylum for the criminally insane, but a freak power outage frees him along with several other murderous madmen, who set in on the staff and their guests! MEDIUM RAW kicks off with plenty of bloody suspense, as a killer in a steel wolf costume sinks his teeth into several young children before being caught. Once the characters enter the asylum, however, all hell breaks loose in the writing. Writer/Director Andrew Cymek takes little care in making the film believable, allowing drunken guards to aimlessly wander the halls and pester its captives, while embittered policeman Jonny Morgan (played by the director) steals a pass card with ease and attempts to kill The Wolf himself. It makes even less sense that The Wolf, a child killer, would go around murdering adults, unless one subscribes to the messy tie-up in the end. And who allows a child to roam free in an insane asylum, anyways? MEDIUM RAW is riddled with logical inconsistencies such as these, but it certainly does not make up for the errors through its uneven characters. None of the players are clearly defined, and the actors jump through emotional hoops with a complete detachment from their characters' inner beings. They simply regurgitate what is on the page without considering whether or not it is true to their characters' personalities. Perhaps Cymek thought little enough of his audience that he could get away with stealing the design of The Wolf from the French Slasher DEEP IN THE WOODS without being caught as well. While it starts off with a very dark tone, MEDIUM RAW falters ever farther with the absurdist black humor that Cymek injects towards the end that is entirely unbefitting with the rest of the film. It is truly unfortunate that there are so many elements working against him here, because MEDIUM RAW had the potential to be a much more frightening film-going experience. Instead, it falls into Slasher tedium where it will be lost amongst the crowd.
