Altered (2006)

After being abducted 15 years earlier, four men set out to catch one of their alien captors. When they finally manage to trap one in the woods and return it to their workshop, they open up a whole new nightmare as more of the razor-clawed creatures begin assaulting them from all sides! Brutal, bloody, and violent, ALTERED comes as a big surprise from BLAIR WITCH PROJECT co-writer Eduardo Sanchez! ALTERED borrows the same basic premise from NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, then cranks up the gore and paranoia as we saw in John Carpenter's THE THING. These are not your friendly neighborhood aliens like in E.T., these suckers hunt in packs and rip everything they see to shreds! If that weren't bad enough, they also have the ability to invade your mind, making it impossible to tell just who your friends are... The fast past and gripping suspense will keep you guessing until the very end! Light on story but heavy on mood, Sanchez' alien terror is sure to leave you ALTERED.

Rating: 7/10.

  1. Although I am no friend of the films from 2000, I have liked this film very well., the story was not new, however, it was shown interesting and realistically. Excitingly and bloody! I find the film good!

  2. I think that this movie could have used a better Editor, a bigger budget and a little less shadow, but it's still got a lot of upsides to it.

I just always find it a shame when a good alien suit gets so little screen-time.

  3. I laughed as I went to the cash register to buy this at Big Lots, assuming I was wasting my money, but I was surprised at how good it was. Reminded me a lot of SPLINTER, but the lighting definitely could have been improved. The bigger surprise is that Sanchez hasnt done more within the genre? I definitely preferred this over Daniel Myrick's THE BELIEVERS.

  5. It's by far the best film by Eduardo Sanchez.

Mind you, the other films are 'The Blair Witch Project' (as Co-Director) and 'Seventh Moon.'

    Not the best company, obviously.

  6. I bought this one on your suggestion MM :)

I actually really liked SEVENTH MOON, and forgot he directed that as well. Thought it was very atmospheric?

  7. When a filmmaker can't hold the damn camera still, light a scene or keep the camera less than three inches away from the actors' faces, I give up on you.

As I said in my review, this film has no excuse for the hand-held camera shit. There's no story reason. When you don't have that, you just look like a jackass who can't afford a tripod.

Is it atmospheric? Somewhat. It's completely-ruined for me by the execution though...
