Screaming in High Heels (2011)

Jason Paul Collum takes us back to the 1980's, where three unknown actresses received their chance at super-stardom in the most unlikeliest of places... SCREAMING IN HIGH HEELS follows Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens and Michelle Bauer from their humble beginnings to their rise to B-Movie royalty, and then on to the inevitable saturation and disintegration of the "Scream Queen" era. Cult filmmakers Fred Olen Ray, David DeCoteau, Kenneth J. Hall, and Ted Newsom join Collum and many others as they discuss the impact that home video had on the Independent film market, and how it granted three small town girls overnight success. With a combined résumé spanning over several hundred films and just over three decades, there is no shortage of fond memories and entertaining anecdotes from films like NIGHTMARE SISTERS, SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE, SORORITY SISTERS IN THE SLIMEBALL BOWL-O-RAMA, and, of course, HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS! Casual viewers are sure to discover interesting new facts about each of the girls, while the hardcore fans will enjoy seeing their favorite leading ladies return to the small screen to discuss their unique careers. SCREAMING IN HIGH HEELS is clearly slanted towards the cult crowd, as the quality of both the acting and filmmaking is frequently glossed over with humor and flattery. The huge amount of energy, sacrifice, and dedication that went in to each of the "Scream Queens'" performances is truly what set them apart in the genre. This is the strongest point that comes across throughout every aspect of the film. Coming in at a brisk 63-minutes, SCREAMING IN HIGH HEELS could use a broader perspective taken from a wider collection of guests, but James Paul Collum has produced what most will consider the definitive documentary on the "Scream Queen" Era.

Rating: 7/10.

Blanc Biehn to Re-Make 'Hidden in the Woods'

BLANC BIEHN PRODUCTIONS ANNOUNCE RE-MAKE OF
HIDDEN IN THE WOODS
(“EN LAS AFUERAS DE LA CIUDAD”)

MONTREAL, QB - July 30th, 2012 - After premiering their new thriller The Victim on July 23rd to rave responses at The Fantasia International Film Festival, Blanc Biehn Productions announced they will be making the English language remake of Patrick Valladares’ “En Las Afueras de la Ciudad” (Hidden in the Woods) which will premiere at The Fantasia International Film Festival on August 6th. Michel Biehn will star in the remake which will be written by original writers and creators of the Spanish version of the film which was shot in Chile by Patricio Valladares and Andrea Cavaletto. Jennifer Blanc Biehn and Michael Biehn will produce. Production begins at the end of 2012 and will shoot on location in Chile.

“I am thrilled to be working with Patricio – I’ve been waiting a very long time for a project like this to cross my path!” says Biehn.

"Patricio is a ferocious new talent, very much like a young Peckinpah in the rough, crossed with Gaspar Noé” says Mitch Davis, Co-Festival Director of the Fantasia International Film Festival. “His style of filmmaking is the very definition of "explosive" and I can't wait to see how his feature debut plays to an audience when we world premiere it at Fantasia next week. That Michael and Jennifer fell in love with Hidden in the Woods at The Fantasia IFF as madly as we have, before the film has ever had a public screening, is, to me, a hugely exciting testament to the power of his work."

The deal was brokered by Jennifer Blanc Biehn of Blanc Biehn Productions and Jennifer Gray at The Law Offices of Elsa Ramo. Michael Biehn will star and Patricio Valladares will direct. The remake will be a joint production for Valladares Films (Patricio Valladares and Evelyn Belmar) and Blanc Biehn Productions (Jennifer Blanc Biehn and Michael Biehn).

The Biehn’s new provocative and gritty grindhouse thriller The Victim, written, directed and starring 80’s horror/sci-fi icon Michael Biehn (The Terminator, Aliens, Tombstone), opens exclusively in New York City on August 24th at the Quad Cinema and in Los Angeles at the New Beverly Cinema on September 7th. The Victim is A Crimson Films Release, In Association with Pegasus Productions and PMK, Distributed by Anchor Bay Films.

ANCHOR BAY FILMS PRESENTS ONE OF THE MOST UNNERVING PSYCHOLOGICAL HORROR FILMS OF THE YEAR WITH

EXCISION

Starring AnnaLynne McCord, Traci Lords, Ariel Winter, Roger Bart, Jeremy Sumpter and Golden Globe® nominated Malcolm McDowell .

Comes to Blu-ray™ and DVD October 30th.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA – July 30, 2011 – On October 30th, Anchor Bay Films presents the harrowing coming-of-age horror film Excision from writer director Richard Bates Jr., which Sundance Channel deemed “Without question the most mind-blowingly grotesque film to screen at this year’s fest.” Boasting an eclectic cast including AnnaLynne McCord (The CW’s “90210,” Transporter 2, Fired Up, FX’s “Nip Tuck”), Traci Lords (Blade, Zack & Miri Make a Porno), Ariel Winter (ABC’s “Modern Family”), Roger Bart (Hostel Part II, Law Abiding Citizen, American Gangster), Malcolm McDowell (The Artist, A Clockwork Orange, Rob Zombie’s Halloween) and cameos including director John Waters, Marlee Matlin and Ray Wise , Excision comes to Blu-ray™ for an SRP of $24.99 and DVD for an SRP of $22.98. Pre-book is October 3rd.

Excision turned critics’ stomachs as well as heads, garnering much attention at festivals this past year. Noel Murray of AV Club calls it “One of the damnedest ‘adolescent misfit’ movies you'll ever see -- for those who can stomach the splatter, that is” and Chris Bumbray of JoBlo exclaims “While it's more than a little sick, and will likely leave you queasy by the time the credits roll, EXCISION is nonetheless a truly unique horror ride into the scariest of all places- the mind of a teenaged misfit.” Excision holds a 94% “want to see” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Based on a short film of the same name, Excision follows a disturbed and delusional high school student, Pauline (AnnaLynne McCord), with aspirations of a career in medicine, goes to extremes to earn the approval of her controlling mother (Traci Lords). While dealing with being an outcast teenager and obsession over curing her sister’s cystic fibrosis, Pauline becomes continually deranged as her fascination of the surgery and the human flesh grows into something abysmal and demonic.

Bonus features on the Excision Blu-ray™ and DVD include an audio commentary, a behind-the-scenes featurette and collectable O-card packaging (for the DVD).

Scott Lebrecht Discusses 'Midnight Son' with ILHM!

He is quickly taking the Indie Horror scene by storm with the release of his first feature-film, and now, director Scott Lebrecht is here to discuss the making of MIDNIGHT SON with I Like Horror Movies! Read on for more behind-the-scenes information on the new cult vampire thriller:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ILHM: MIDNIGHT SON is quite unlike any other vampire film in the genre. Can you take us through the genesis of the script?

SCOTT LEBRECHT: When I lived in San Francisco, there was an old house I walked past every day that was boarded up and seemingly abandoned. The odd thing was that someone had covered the windows (from the inside) with whimsical paintings of trees and rainbow landscapes. I imagined a person trapped inside that could not come out, trying to connect with people passing by-- someone who perhaps could not be exposed to sunlight, and was very lonely. At that point I realized I had never really seen a vampire film that depicted the physical condition as something debilitating and tragic, as opposed to empowering or romantic.

ILHM: The vampire is unmistakably the most filmed movie monster. How did you go about redefining the creature in this unique new tale?

SL: I wanted to tell a story about a young man coping with his transformation into something he believes is ‘wrong’ or ‘evil’. Treating it as a congenital illness-- rather than an infection by some outside organism-- played into the idea of my character being antagonized by his own body. Events like puberty, sexual attraction, and falling in love are all things that happen to us from the inside out. We generally dislike being at the mercy of anything, but when the thing we don’t want emanates from within, our self-image shatters. We must cope with a new set of rules, and our identity is temporarily on hold. These are very scary moments in life, and it is always what I wanted to explore.

I believe everyone carries urges and thoughts that they feel are ‘wrong’ or even downright evil. This can result in a very lonely existence fuelled by a fear of rejection and even death. I have a personal theory that accepting our inner ‘monster’ is unavoidable if we are ever to achieve balance or what some might call happiness. All the characters in Midnight Son are driven by an unconscious desire to accept themselves for what they truly are.

ILHM: MIDNIGHT SON repeatedly hits on the theme of addiction in its varying forms. Please speak to the relationship between blood and drugs in the film.

SL: Addiction is a fact of life we all participate in. Everyone is addicted to something. Most of the time, these things distract us from our existential dread. The crushing knowledge that all life ends, no matter how productive or worthwhile, requires something to ease the pain of our own mortality. The mirroring of blood and drugs in MIDNIGHT SON is a comment on this. To me, acknowledging death / rejecting death is the psychological pendulum swing of our daily human existence.

ILHM: Critics agree that the slow, character-driven approach in MIDNIGHT SON is what gives it such an overwhelming appeal. Do you feel that audiences are ready to return to more cerebral Horror films after being desensitized to blood and gore?

SL: I think cerebral horror films like SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and SEVEN are a challenge to get financed, but I also know audiences are starved for good story. If a film delivers the horror, any additional complexity or depth makes it that much more satisfying.

ILHM: What does the sun represent to Jacob?

SL: I think the sun represents Jacob’s lost innocence. To me, his paintings embody the spirit of a child. They symbolize the part of himself he must let go before transforming into a man.

ILHM: Which key qualities were you looking for when casting each character?

SL: For Jacob, I was looking for an actor that could embody the contrasting energies of shame and rebellion. For Mary, destroyer and mother. For Marcus, hope and hopelessness.

ILHM: What stood out in Zak Kilberg's audition that earned him the role of Jacob?

SL: His vulnerability is what got him the part. Zak is no fool, but he desperately wants to be loved and accepted. I think we all do.

ILHM: Jacob is far more reserved and introverted than your average vampire. Is this a character you feel modern audiences will identify with in an age that is filled with sparkling, swooning vampires?

SL: I think what makes audiences identify with Jacob is the fact that he is spiraling out of control and trying to do the right thing even though his concepts of morality are disintegrating. Most people can admit the disturbing truth that morality or 'right and wrong' are constantly changing based on popular opinion. People were executed ages ago for things that would be considered superstitious nonsense now. It’s hard to imagine that crimes we kill people for today will be deemed acceptable behavior in the future, but this is what history has shown us. Everyone feels they have desires and impulses deep inside that are ‘bad’ and must be repressed. This has nothing to do with the individual. It has everything to do with society. Jacob is a reflection of that shameful, secret side of ourselves we don’t want anyone to know about.

ILHM: Jacob would be incomplete without his eccentric love interest, Mary. Please tell us about your experiences with Maya Parish both on and off set.

SL: Maya is an incredibly hard-working, passionate actor and filmmaker. On set, she was totally committed and willing to do anything that needed to be done. Without her, I never would have been able to make MIDNIGHT SON. She was always pushing me, in every way, to make the best film possible.

ILHM: Which vampire films did you admire most growing up?

SL: I loved FRIGHT NIGHT (1985). I liked it because there was a constant undercurrent of comedy beneath-- and on the surface-- of what was technically supposed to be a straight up horror film. Tom Holland did something amazing when you consider how hard it must be to strike a tone between two completely different genres. I love films that are difficult or impossible to put in any single genre.

ILHM: What interests you most in a good Horror film?

SL: Probably the exploration of fear. I think our fears are the hardest thing to conquer, so it always feels good to watch characters onscreen confront theirs. Horror is the one genre that encourages and demands this examination. I personally think Sam Mendes makes great ‘suburban horror’ films. I consider AMERICAN BEAUTY and REVOLUTIONARY ROAD to be horror masterpieces.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A very special thanks goes out again to Scott Lebrecht and the entire cast and crew of MIDNIGHT SON! Be sure to check out the film, available now on DVD and VOD!

Enter '6 Degrees of Hell' with Corey Feldman

COREY FELDMAN'S
6 DEGREES OF HELL
TO BE RELEASED BY BREAKING GLASS PICTURES

PHILADELPHIA, PA - July 26, 2012 - Domestic distributor Breaking Glass Pictures (5 Star Day, The Fields, The Living Wake) has snapped up the indie horror film 6 Degrees of Hell for North America. The deal was struck last week between CEO Rich Wolff and Fabrication Films SVP Miriam Elchanan, a follow-up to the successful release of The Fields earlier this year. Directed by Joe Raffa (local hit You'll Know My Name), the film stars Corey Feldman (The Lost Boys, The Goonies), Jill Whelan ("The Love Boat"), Brian Anthony Wilson (Limitless), Faust Checho (The Fields), newcomers Nikki Bell, Kyle Patrick Brennan, Ashley Sumner, Nicole Cinaglia, David J. Bonner and Raffa himself.

In Northeast Pennsylvania, "Uncle Jack's Hotel of Horror" is besieged by a dark presence after two friends of "Uncle" Jack, Chris and Kellen, unwittingly release a deadly evil by transporting local psychic Mary Wilkins' collection of haunted objects as props for the popular tourist attraction. At the same time, a local TV ghost hunter, confronts an evil that has haunted him all his life-one he believes is responsible for his sister's death years ago.

His search puts him in the path of a rogue police chief and June-a girl who seems to be the eye of this supernatural perfect storm. They all find themselves connected to the old hotel while the threads of their own personal horrors draw paranormal investigator Kyle Brenner (Feldman) to pull all the threads together...

Looking forward to another release with Breaking Glass, writer/producer Harrison Smith said, "We're excited about 6 Degrees of Hell because it makes horror fun again. It's a horror film with Easter eggs, there's so much horror history in it. It's intelligent, fun horror with solid characters and respect for the genre."

Wolff echoed his sentiments, saying "6 Degrees is an excellent film, and the second in what will hopefully be many successful collaborations between Breaking Glass, Fabrication, and Harrison. It is a perfect match."

Developments on the title have been closely watched, with an astonishing 101,000 followers on the 6 Degrees of Hell official Facebook and over 1.5 million trailer views on YouTube.

There is a celebratory theatrical screening scheduled in the shooting location, the Pocono Mountains, on August 24th 2012. Corey Feldman, various cast and crew and Breaking Glass Pictures staff will attend and celebrate both the ongoing success of The Fields and the acquiring of 6 Degrees Of Hell.

Joel Hodgson Returns with 'Cinematic Titanic'

Film Chest Acquires VOD and Streaming Rights to
CINEMATIC TITANIC

10 Films (From the Original Creator and Cast of Mystery Science Theater 3000)
Set to Debut on Film Chest’s Dedicated Content Channel,
American Pop Classics on Hulu and Hulu Plus

BRIDGEPORT, CT — July 26, 2012 — Film Chest has acquired VOD and streaming rights to Cinematic Titanic, the new feature-length movie riffing show from the creator and original cast of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 (MST3K).

Film Chest – which boasts one of the world’s largest libraries (10,000+ hours) of classic feature films, television, foreign imports, documentaries, special interest and audio, much of it restored and digitized in HD – produces and distributes classic collector’s DVD sets and has a dedicated American Pop Classics content channel which is available on Hulu and Hulu Plus.

Like MST3K – a cult Comedy Central hit series in the ‘90s – Cinematic Titanic was created by Joel Hodgson (who also starred in the original version) and features the same team that first brought the Peabody Award-winning cult classic series to life: Trace Beaulieu (Crow, Dr. Forrester), J. Elvis Weinstein (Tom Servo, Dr. Erhardt), Frank Conniff (TV’s Frank) and Mary Jo Pehl (Pearl Forrester). Cinematic Titanic continues the tradition of riffing on “unfathomable, horribly great and just plain cheesy” classic B- and C-genre movies (often considered cult films), with the cast silhouetted in front of the movie screen.

Ten Cinematic Titanic titles will immediately be available on the American Pop Classics Channel on Hulu and Hulu Plus, including: Alien Factor, Blood of the Vampires, Danger on Tiki Island, Doomsday Machine, East Meets Watts, Frankenstein’s Castle of Freaks, Legacy of Blood, The Oozing Skull, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians and The Wasp Woman.

Commented Phil Hopkins and Ralph Stevens, co-owners of Film Chest, “We are cult film enthusiasts and personal fans of MST3K and Cinematic Titanic. We are extremely excited to add these 10 feature-length titles to our American Pop Classics label and to offer them to a new generation of fans on Hulu and Hulu Plus.”

Added Hodgson, “The Cinematic Titanic crew is excited about the partnership with Film Chest, which furthers our mission to reconnect with Mystery Science Theater 3000 fans around the world, as well as hopefully bring new fans to the comedy art form first introduced by this group 25 year ago on cable. For some strange reason movie riffing has not gone out of style, it just keeps jumping to new formats.”

About the featured films…

Alien Factor (1976)
Warning: Baltimore is no longer safe. Meet Leemoid, Zagatile and Interbyce. They're the three aliens whose spaceship has crashed in a small town outside of Baltimore. Soon the town folk are turning up mutilated and dead … and even in polyester pants.

Blood of the Vampires (1966)
The Escodero family is cursed! The mother, who the Escodero children assumed to be dead, is actually an undead vampire who lurks in a secret basement/dungeon hidden from the rest of the house. When the kids discover this dark truth, all hell breaks loose.

Danger on Tiki Island (1968)
An atomic bomb test in the South Pacific creates an isolated world of terror. Strange things are happening on this remote island in the Pacific, where a Peace Corps volunteer, a researcher and his lady arrive to find that the plants have been mutated.

Doomsday Machine (1972)
American spies discover the Chinese have built a weapon capable of destroying planet Earth, a “doomsday machine” if you will, and that they plan to use it within a matter of days.

East Meets Watts (1974)
Kung Fu hits the streets! Young Larry Chin arrives from China looking for his long lost brother and stumbles into some shady characters that'd just as soon see him go home or get dead. He crosses paths with Stud Brown, and the two become an unlikely duo.

Frankenstein’s Castle of Freaks (1974)
Things get a bit randy in this updated version of Mary Shelley’s immortal classic about immortality. Why can't Dr. Frankenstein get a break? Just as our mad scientist is about to bring his creature back to life, he is forced to use a sub-standard brain.

Legacy of Blood (1971)
The Dean family patriarch has died and left a fortune to his children and servants. The occasion soon turns grim when they discover they must all must spend an entire week at the family estate … together.

The Oozing Skull (1972)
In the far-off land of Khalid, President Amir lies on his deathbed. If this revered head-of-state dies, the brutal dictatorship that he has so lovingly cultivated will fall into a dark age of uncertainty and chaos.

Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (1964)
The children of Mars are in a funk, and nothing on the red planet seems to be able to cheer them up. Martian King Kimar comes up with the only reasonable solution: Kidnap Santa Claus from Earth’s North Pole and bring him to their planet to make toys.

The Wasp Woman (1959)
Janice Starlin, purveyor of her own line of cosmetics, finds herself nearing middle-age (in a time when 38 was the new 94). A stranger with an accent and an unnatural love of wasps enters her life and promises her the elixir that will prolong her youth.

Hostel 3 (2011)

The stakes turn deadly for four friends when their bachelor party lands them in a seedy nightclub off the Las Vegas Strip that is run by the secretive Elite Hunting organization! With creator Eli Roth out of the picture for the third film in the popular HOSTEL franchise, Scott Spiegel seemed like an ideal candidate to take over in his place. After all, Spiegel has worked closely with childhood friend Sam Raimi on numerous pictures, and even directed the cult Slasher INTRUDER, a film in which he deployed the same twisted sense of humor that is often found in the HOSTEL series. Despite these facts, Spiegel turns out a painfully stupid and uninviting sequel that is completely devoid of the most entertaining elements of the original. The dark, Eastern European setting has been exchanged for the bright lights of Vegas, only the majority of the film takes place off of the strip, making the location of the events irrelevant. None of the characters are perceived as being heroic or even remotely likeable for that matter, making their prolonged deaths a matter of celebration. And if that weren't enough, the inventive torturing devices for which the series has become notorious are reduced to the same tired methods of dispatch that you could find in any dollar bin DVD. With SAW already on its "final chapter," it seems that the Torture Porn genre has finally run its course, so HOSTEL may be closing its doors for good after this disaster.

Scalene (2011)

A frantic mother. Her invalid son. An unsuspecting caretaker. The perceived realities of these three individuals will result in a terrible crime, but who is the real victim? Zack Parker takes us on a twisted journey through the human psyche in his new thriller SCALENE. The events unfold from three unique perspectives as we are transported backwards and forwards in time to better understand the intentions and circumstances leading up to an apparent rape, mirroring a similar stylistic device used by Christopher Nolan in the cult thriller MEMENTO. Parker demonstrates a cautious sense of control as he begins and ends each new vignette, skillfully avoiding any contradictions in the space-time continuum that is laid out before us. By opening with the story's ending, Parker is also able to better perceive the audience's expectations, only to thwart them once the viewers have settled in on their opinions. SCALENE is led by a talented cast, including powerful performances by Margo Martindale as Janice Trimble, Hanna Hall as the seemingly-altruistic Paige Alexander, and Adam Scarimbolo as Janice's brain-damaged son Jakob.

Rating: 7/10.

Anchor Bay Goes On An Undead Adventure!

ANCHOR BAY FILMS PICKS UP
THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF THE
LIVING CORPSE
AT COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL

BEVERLY HILLS, CA – July 19, 2012 – Anchor Bay Films announced today the acquisition of distribution rights in the English-speaking territories (U.S., Canada, UK, Australia-New Zealand) for The Amazing Adventures of the Living Corpse, a new animated motion picture based on the comic book by the same name from Dynamite Entertainment Comics. Produced by Shoreline Entertainment, the film debuted this past weekend at Comic-Con International. The deal was announced by Bill Clark, President of Anchor Bay Entertainment.

“The Amazing Adventures of the Living Corpse premiered at Comic-Con in San Diego on Saturday night to a sold out, raucous and cheering crowd,” stated Morris Ruskin, producer of the film and CEO of Shoreline Entertainment, Inc. “According to co-creator of the comic, Ken Haeser, the fans seemed to really appreciate that the production captured the essence of the graphic novel.”

The film is an adaptation of the underground hit graphic novel by Ken Haeser and Buz Hasson. A guilt-ridden corpse takes on a heavy burden when he agrees to help a Fallen Angel keep the other undead in their graves and powers of evil from corrupting our world.

The nature of the superhero making its transition from the sublime pages of comic books to the magical screens of cinema, however, will be slightly unique this time around. For starters, the title character isn’t your typical caped crusader – he’s a zombie. And he’s not just a typical zombie, either. He’s a contentious, imposing citizen of the walking dead club with an intact memory from when he was alive, and a mission to protect the Earth from other brain-sucking flesh-eaters. The Amazing Adventures of the Living Corpse, which was directed by Justin Ritter, produced by Ritter and Ruskin and Executive Produced by Eduardo Castro, Eileen Craft, Darcy Feld and Dennis Sonnenschein, took three years to animate and was rendered in state-of-the-art RealD 3D.

Go 'Berserk' in Author Tim Lebbon's New Sci Fi Horror Book

BERSERK

Cold and Queasy Horror
From NY Times Bestselling Author

TORONTO, ON - July 18, 2012 - New York Times bestselling author and Bram Stoker Award-winner Tim Lebbon delivers a shocking novel, described by Publisher’s Weekly as “cold, queasy horror.” In Berserk, a dangerous military experiment on England's Salisbury Plain goes fatally awry, and the victims are quietly, secretly buried. Ten years later, one soldier’s still grieving father gets wind that there was more to the accident. He locates the burial place, excavates the site, and discovers not his son's remains but the moldering corpse of a little girl animated by a peculiar form of life.

Tim Lebbon’s short story, "Reconstructing Amy," won the Stoker Award for Short Fiction in 2001, and his novel Dusk won the 2007 August Derleth Award from the British Fantasy Society for best novel of the year. His novelization of the movie 30 Days of Night became a New York Times bestseller and won a Scribe Award in 2008. He is able to create a world through his writing that feels more like a sci fi mmo game than a novel. Tim lives in Goytre, Monmouthshire, UK with his wife and two children.

Move in to 'The Perfect House' This July

EVIL HAS A NEW ADDRESS...
THE PERFECT HOUSE

The Perfect Horror Movie With The Perfect Terror Tale
Of The Perfect Dream House With The Not-So Perfect Past!

A “high Tech” Guerilla Filmmaking Approach, 21st Century Style!

LOS ANGELES, CA - July 18, 2012 - Lots of films are made without money, studio backing, Hollywood contacts or professional actors every year, but very few have the polish and cache of Gratwick Films groundbreaking independent feature film "The Perfect House".

"The Perfect House" not only marks the official feature directorial debut of Buffalo (NY) native Kris Hulbert, but also makes cinematic history in filmmaking as the world' s first indie feature film to ever premiere on an independent-movie distribution platform built for Facebook.

The first film to officially virally debut on the hugely popular social media platform (Facebook), "The Perfect House" has been touted as the trailblazing film that has redefined the traditional methods with regards to standard Hollywood channels of distribution in today's entertainment landscape.

Having already garnered a legion of fans, the overnight sensation online full-length film has undeniably become the talk of cyberspace, instantly developing a following that has now taken a life of its own. Currently available on Facebook for only $3, "The Perfect House" (a Gratwick Films Production) is continuing its successful interactive run. It will next be released on DVD July 17 and on VOD (with a never-seen-before behind the scene documentary) on October 1, 2012, through all major online platforms including Facebook, Gratwickproductions.com, ThePerfectHouse.com, among numerous other distribution outlets.

Pioneering the concept and use of “vertical integration” from the idea to the method of consumption, Hulbert along with Gratwick Films business partner Andrea Vahl are – much like the Steve Jobs’ of the world – spearheading THE novel distribution model of the future. A model centered on the artist as a viable independent entrepreneur and not a slave to the studio system and its corporate distribution tycoons.

Never judge a book by its cover, or in this case a house by its owner! That, in a nutshell, is the premise of the film that currently has cyberspace wrapped around its fingers.

It’s a riveting, visually intense, psychological examination of what real life horror is – the capacity for evil that hides within each of us yet remains anonymous. Shedding light on what the human spirit can ultimately destroy, endure and overcome, the film focuses on the nonsensical, random, at times ruthless and fundamentally relative aspects of true real horror.

Written/Produced by Kris Hubert and Co-directed by the latter and Randy Kent, "The Perfect House" is the buzz-heavy anthology horror movie about a dream-house with a hidden dark past. The film features an ensemble cast including Jonathan Tiersten, Andrea Vahl, Chris Raab aka "Raab Himself", Will Robertson, John Philbin, Becky Friedman, Hans Hernke, Holly Greene, Dustin Stevens, Jamie Lee Baker and Angelina Leigh, to name a few.

Shot guerilla style on a micro budget with no Hollywood contacts, on location in Buffalo, in the impressive span of just fourteen days, the film retraces the horrific history of a seemingly perfect house via three separate stories skillfully bound together by one principal frame plot and one central character: the (perfect) house.

Providing three unique tales of horror - subtitled in order of appearance: "The Storm", Chi-ken" and "Dinner Guest" - Hulbert brilliantly creates a captivatingly dramatic unity that organically holds the multiple plot lines together and flawlessly carry the momentum throughout the entire film leaving the viewer with a sense of completeness.

The DYI filmmaking approach certainly didn’t deter Hulbert and his entire team from delivering a fantastic feature film that more than successfully legitimately competes with big-budget Hollywood motion pictures in quality and storytelling.

But more than a craftily executed filmmaking technique that is both intentionally avoiding the traditional typical three-act structure, and challenging the basic principles of screenwriting by voluntarily writing a story with no character names or defined location, what the film fundamentally delivers is a uniquely endearing homage to the horror genre.

“The Perfect House” is a real horror movie that takes the standard Hollywood formula for this filmmaking style, kicks it to the curb with an in-your-face real raw horror.

Unlike any other films, "The Perfect House" successfully runs through all the horror-movie genre's signature styles of three specific time period of horror: the 60-70s black & white off-camera violence suspense ("The Storm"), the classic 80's slasher with dark humor mixed in and crazed unstoppable killer on the loose ("Chi-ken"), and modern day graphically disturbing massacre with icy cold feel and the brutal unrelenting conclusion ("Dinner Guest"). With that in mind, everything from the plot of the stories, the lighting, the shot selection, all the way through the post sound and color correction was specifically designed around the objective of faithfully adhering to the established styles and standards of these different sub-genres of horror.

Yet perhaps what makes "The Perfect House" even more so effectively terrifying is the real grisly tale of the story behind the story. A film that refuses to fit the norm, "The Perfect House" takes a radical departure from what seems to have been the general consensus not only in front of the cameras but also behind the scenes.

When Kris Hulbert set sail to Buffalo to make his first co-directorial effort, he had one simple goal in mind: to turn his short film "Dinner Guest" into a full length feature film. To keep the shoot extremely cost effective he ingeniously elaborated a high concept story based on the grassroots approach of utilizing what was available: a single free location (his grandfather's house in Buffalo), friends and family who made up the initial investors, and the committed dedication of passionate actors to play his characters.

The film comports an equal mix of recognizable Hollywood talent with fresh faces and local talent from Western New York. The result is an impressive collaborative effort from both cast/crew members who all, ultimately, were an integral part of the overall process, not to mention, took a giant leap of faith to be part of this extraordinary cinematic experience, albeit one that offered small monetary compensation privileging instead budget-spending on high-tech professional equipment.

The lack of experience, they all commonly shared not only allowed for a strong feeling of camaraderie on set –one that also transpires onscreen – but also became the greatest asset of the filmmaking process as everyone got rid of the ego involved in shooting, instead leaving space for collaborative creativity and experimentation.

A behind the scene story almost too good to be true! Yet what Kris didn't know was how that seemingly perfect true Hollywood fairy tale type of story would quickly turn into a real nightmare. Ironically, much like his fictional "Perfect House"' has, underneath it all, more stories to tell, there's also more to this phenomenal filmmaking journey than meets the eye.

For Hulbert the task of recovering his producers’ operating and investment costs and securing a major distribution deal proved to be more daunting then first assumed. Learning to swim in the shark tank that is the ferociously unscrupulous Hollywood money-driven machine, Hulbert endured – post making of “The Perfect House” phase – his own real life horror, namely the political, bureaucratic, corporate and individual corruption of the studio distribution system. But as the saying goes: It’s not the destination but the journey that counts – especially when the journey has become the ultimate modern day tale of the classic story of David v. Goliath. And who doesn’t like routing for the “underdog?”

In many ways, “The Perfect House” can be seen as cathartic for the young filmmaker. On and off the screen, the film became, literally and figuratively speaking, a very real and disturbing manifestation of true horror for Hulbert.

While major distribution deals were pouring in, notably an offer for the film at the Cannes Film festival, Hulbert and his team opted to walk away, whilst standing up to the politics and personal agendas of the corrupt corporate executive trope. Returning with more conviction than ever before to his initial self-distribution motif, Hulbert confidently stands as one of the first visionary artists to declare his own indie revolution on corporate Hollywood.

Kris Hulbert still remains at the forefront of the next generation of filmmakers. Sticking to his “high-tech guerilla” business and production model via Gratwick Films, the avant-garde storyteller and entrepreneur is securely cementing his status as an enduring talent who has pioneered a new wave of filmmaking where a no-to-low budget equals just as many opportunities and possibilities for distribution and release as a multi-million dollar film.

“With a focus on responsible filmmaking our goal is to eliminate the “clutter” and build a more direct and intimate relationship with our fans.” says Hulbert, “In the era of rampant piracy, We intend to make it not only cheaper and more convenient, but more engaging and personal to support our brand of entertainment.”

And “The Perfect House” is only the beginning!

Ghost Rider (2007)

Here's an idea: Take the demonic, flaming-skulled Spirit of Vengeance known as the Ghost Rider, one of the darkest heroes the world has ever known, remove all of the bloody violence from the comics, and then replace it with jelly beans and The Carpenters. If that isn't enough, drop a PG-13 rating on the film and hire a middle-aged hack to play the lead character as a final slap in the face to all of the fans.

In GHOST RIDER, motorcycle stuntman Johnny Blaze makes a pact with the devil to save his father's life, but in exchange, he is tricked into becoming the devil's bounty hunter. As the Spirit of Vengeance, Ghost Rider must take off across the American Southwest to recover an ancient scroll for his new master while battling the forces of evil along the way.

GHOST RIDER is a comic fan's worst nightmare. It demonstrates everyone's darkest fears when it comes to studio involvement tainting our most beloved characters on screen. Watching GHOST RIDER is like watching a competition for "World's Worst Actor." Eva Mendez must have breathed a sigh of relief when she was cast beside Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze's love interest. Even her stunning good looks cannot distract from her talentless performance. Nic Cage, on the other hand, can. Somewhere along the lines, Nic Cage must have mistaken the script for a comedy just as he had done in THE WICKER MAN remake, since he certainly makes a fool of himself the entire film. This version of Johnny Blaze is nothing but a disgrace to the tragic character in the comics, and Cage takes it upon himself to ham it up at every turn. And that still leaves out Wes Bentley, whose flamboyant take on the villainous Blackheart is laughable at best.

Try as he might, Mark Steven Johnson simply cannot pull together a major comic book adaptation. He makes the same mistakes in GHOST RIDER as he had in DAREDEVIL, placing far too much emphasis on comedy and cheap romance in place of the violent action, pathos, and quest for revenge that are inherent to the story of Johnny Blaze. While there are several winning moments in the effects department that bring classic comic panels to life in a stunning display of fire and brimstone, the visual success of the film cannot compete with Johnson's failures in the scriptwriting process. Poor decisions regarding the uneven tone of the film and the absurd actions taken by the characters only serve to drive a deepening wedge between the audience and the events on screen.

Why Columbia would gamble away a major movie franchise on such a pitiful combination of writing, acting, and directing, the world may never know, but the complete and utter failure of the film's first sequel will hopefully prevent the studio from doing any further damage to the character of the Ghost Rider.

Rating: 5/10.

Dead Season (2012)

Elvis and Tweeter think they've found hope off the coast of Florida, but they soon find themselves trapped on an island that is swarming with the undead! Brace yourself for more of the same tired cliches in the new zombie survival film DEAD SEASON, Adam Deyoe's fifth feature film following other such classics as PSYCHO SLEEPOVER and YETI: A LOVE STORY. The bore-o-meter is reading surprisingly high in Florida during this year's DEAD SEASON, with the only thing duller than the characters being the dreadful dialog that accompanies them. Cinematography Jeffrey Peters seems unusually obsessed with keeping everything tight in frame, filming nearly every shot in an unnecessary close-up. Credit is due to the film's make-up team for sticking strictly to practical effects, but the zombie action is infrequent at best, and hardly worth the wait. Everyone has their favorite season, but DEAD SEASON comes in dead last on that list.

Rating: 5/10.

Experience John F. Taff's 'Little Deaths'

LITTLE DEATHS

You Think You’ve Got Bad Dreams?

TORONTO, ON - July 16, 2012 - Consider author John F. D Taff’s. How about the one where a guy resurrects his dead girlfriend with a set of prop neck bolts used on Boris Karloff in the 1931 classic Frankenstein? Or one where the ghost of the author’s dead dog entices his into death so they can be together? Or the one where a guy loves candy…to death? Taff has turned these nightmares into the short stories he shares in his new collection Little Deaths.

Little Deaths features 19 pieces of short fiction; chilling, weird looks at the human condition from a decidedly dark perspective.

John F. D. Taff’s stories have been published in Cemetery Dance, Deathrealm, Big Pulp, and One Buck Horror, as well as anthologies such as Hot Book: Fear the Fever, Hot Blood: Seeds of Fear, Shock Rock II, Best New Vampire Tales, Vol. 1, Best New Werewolf Tales, Vol. 1, Evil Jester Digest Vol. 1 and the AmFar charity anthology Horror for Good.

Books of the Dead Press, based in Toronto, was founded by James Roy Daley in 2009. The company is focused on publishing quality horror books by quality authors. Recent works include: Husk by Matt Hults; Gary Brandner’s The Howling Trilogy, Pain Cages by Paul Kane, Badass Zombie Road Trip by Tonia Brown, the Zombie Kong anthology, James Roy Daley’s novella Zombie Kong, and Little Deaths by John F.D. Taff.

A Serbian Film (2010)

Sick, twisted, and disturbing are inadequate terms used to describe Srdjan Spasojevic's notorious new Exploitation picture, A SERBIAN FILM. Reprehensible, ultra-violent pornography is much more accurate, but in a world that has become numbed to sex, violence, and gore in a film, is this not what we crave? Spasojevic brings us the next generation of shock, working off of similar themes to those found in Pier Paolo Pasolini's SALO and Michael Haneke's FUNNY GAMES. The only world in which A SERBIAN FILM can be made is a world in which it can be sold and consumed, and the record number of reviews for this film show that viewers the world over are ready for this extreme form of entertainment. For those of you who have watched this film and protested its graphic content, you must ask yourself "Why did I watch this film in the first place? Was it not my own morbid curiosity that drove me to see it?" A SERBIAN FILM is easy enough to avoid just in reading the film's synopsis:

Milos, a poor and retired porn star, is offered the deal of a lifetime to return to his previous profession for one final film. The catch is that he is unable to read the script, a fact that he will soon live to regret as he and his family are pulled in to the director's horrifying new vision...

Drugs, rape, incest, torture... All of the things that a proper society looks extricate or ignore are prominently displayed on screen in graphic detail, and for no better reason than to disgust. The fact that this film has been censored and re-released in several edited forms in a day and age where 'Uncut' and 'Not Rated' have become huge selling points can speak to the film's power. Its continued sale, however, only serves to prove Spasojevic's point: That there is a market for everything... 'Newborn Porn' not excluded. A SERBIAN FILM is only softened by the fact that it is so professionally made and cleanly shot, placing the filter of fiction over the characters' actions and the audience. Had Spasojevic employed a hand-held approach and bought in to the "found-footage" trend, we may have been faced with dangerous and potentially criminal results. We must then ask ourselves, "What's next?" Who will be the one that takes that next step, and when they do, will we watch? It is difficult to justify a film with such explicit content, but, if for nothing else, A SERBIAN FILM becomes a valid form of art when it forces us to confront alarming issues such as these in any medium.

Rating: 8/10.

Starring A. Michael Baldwin of Don Coscarelli's "Phantasm" franchise

LOS ANGELES, CA - July 14, 2012 - After waiting 12 years for the right film to to come along, A. Michael Baldwin makes his return to the big screen. The whole world sees him as Mike Pearson from "Phantasm", a very iconic part. Many film makers who grew up as fans have offered him lead roles in their movies but he turned them down. He was never going to return to the film industry and act again, unless he could find another iconic & memorable role, that would separate him from "Phantasm". That role finally came when he read the script for "Brutal".

The music for "Brutal" is composed by John Carpenter's (Halloween) partner of over a decade, Mr. Alan Howarth. Alan has worked on some of the biggest films of all-time, Halloween 2-6, Star Trek 1-6, The Thing, and many, many more. Alan completely transformed "Brutal" with the soundtrack just like John Carpenter did with Halloween 35 years before.

Darla Rae, co-director, is an award winning director who got her start in film as an actress in John Carpenter's Halloween. Finally, special effect make-up was by Christina Kortum, who also works on the hit T.V. show "Grimm"

PIRANHA 3DD

BEVERLY HILLS, CA – July 10, 2012   Anchor Bay Entertainment and Dimension Films announced today the 3D Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD release of the campy comedy-horror film, PIRANHA 3DD. A sequel to Piranha 3D – the 2010 reboot of the fan-favorite franchise from the ‘70s – PIRANHA 3DD stars Danielle Panabaker (The Crazies, Friday the 13th), Katrina Bowden (TV’s “30 Rock”), David Koechner (Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Get Smart), David Hasselhoff (TV’s “Baywatch,” “Knight Rider”), Christopher Lloyd (Piranha 3D, Back to the Future), and Gary Busey (Lethal Weapon, The Buddy Holly Story). PIRANHA 3DD incorporates the classic elements of the teen horror/exploitation movies of the 1970s, packed with ferocious flesheaters, scantily-clad young victims, and bizarre and exciting twists and turns. Whereas Piranha 3D took place on a lake, the 2012 sequel is set at a water park, complete with water slides and a lazy river – the perfect places for piranha mayhem! Back for more outrageous fun, Christopher Lloyd reprises his role as the eccentric piranha expert.
